History and DefinitionProgram DescriptionPaper ScripeScripClub ScripSchoolpopAnnual RequirementScrip CoordinatorHistory and DefinitionScrip is a certificate, recognized by payers and payees as the equivalent of currency. Scrip has been used for centuries as a temporary substitute for money in exchange for goods and services. In 1988, scrip was introduced as a fundraising tool at St. Vincent High School in Petaluma, in desperate need of funds and facing closure. It came up with the idea of using grocery store gift certificates to raise funds for the school. The program was a great success, raising $30,000 for the school and simultaneously establishing an ongoing relationship between the Catholic schools of the Santa Rosa diocese and the National Scrip Center. Since 1988, scrip has grown to become an integral part of fundraising programs for schools, churches and charitable organizations (Catholic, public and private, alike) and has rapidly expanded throughout the United States. It has also expanded to add fundraising programs such as eScrip. Program DescriptionThe St. Lucy Scrip Program was instituted many years ago as a convenient means of adding to the school's operational budget and helping to limit the price of tuition. In recent years, the types of Scrip offered by vendors have become more numerous, adding choices and convenience to parents, relatives, alumni and friends of St. Lucy Parish School in their purchase of Scrip. The St. Lucy Scrip Program consists of four parts, Paper Scrip, eScrip, Club Scrip and Schoolpop, described in further detail, below. Although paper is the most popular form of Scrip, grocery purchases through eScrip and Club Scrip are the easiest way to reach the annual requirement for each family. Once you are familiar with how eScrip and Club Scrip work, our Grocery Summary puts the details of each major grocery store's program in a simple chart. Parents need to record ONLY their Club Scrip (e.g. Albertson's, Nob Hill, Target) on the front of the WCE in the appropriate column to receive proper credit for these purchases that are not recorded on eScrip. All other Scrip will be recorded by the coordinator and included in a monthly statement.Your Scrip Statement will include Paper Scrip purchases, eScrip (as reported online a few months behind) and Club Scrip that you record on the WCE. Keep up with the latest in Scrip offerings by reading the quasi-monthly Scrip Newsletter in the WCE.The most recent edition is posted here. Paper ScripPaper Scrip is a form of gift certificate or card that the school purchases at a discount and resells to supporters at the face value for which it can be redeemed. Depending on the vendor, the school can earn from 5% to 25% of the face value of the scrip certificate. Each vendor provides its own Scrip, some with the words “Gift Certificate” printed on it. At the store it spends just like cash; there are no catches or hidden charges. If your purchases require change, each store has its own policy. Occasionally there are special seasonal offers promoted in WCE flyers and Scrip newsletters. Purchasing Paper ScripFor your convenience, there are three ways to purchase Paper Scrip: Fill out the order form in the Wednesday Communication Envelope. Orders sent in the return WCE are processed Friday morning by volunteers in the Accounting Office. If you would like to help fill orders and receive Parent Service credit, contact the Scrip Coordinator at scrip@stlucyschool.org. When you place a WCE Scrip order, specify whether you want it to be picked up at the Accounting Office, sent home with your student on Friday, or returned in the next week’s WCE. Paper Scrip also may be purchased at any time during school hours at the Accounting Office, or at certain Sunday masses. See the Scrip Newsletter for updates. New for this school year is the ability to order Paper Scrip via email. You will first need to complete and return the credit card authorization at the bottom of your Scrip Order in the WCE inner envelope. Once your card number is on file, all you need to do is send an email to scrip@stlucyschool.org indicating what kind and how much Scrip you would like. The Scrip orders emailed by Thursday will be processed and delivered as a regular Scrip order. eScripThis Web-based program (www.eScrip.com) enables a portion of credit card and ATM card purchases with participating merchants to be contributed to St. Lucy Parish School. Families must create an account and register their credit cards online. Purchases and contributions can be tracked and viewed by the registered family member. EScrip also allows for online purchases from major retailers to make a contribution. However, you must first go to www.eScrip.com to select an online retailer. When you pay with a registered credit card, a portion goes to St. Lucy’s. Alumni across the country can register to support St. Lucy. With over 100 participating merchants, there are almost certain to be one or two, wherever they live. Registration ProcessThere are 6 easy steps to securely register as a St. Lucy supporter with
eScrip, once you've gone to eScrip.com and selected the Signup menu item.
If you're ready to sign up, just click here. Online Purchases with eScripWhenever you make purchases online, you can still get eScrip credit. Instead of going to the online store directly, go to eScrip's Online Mall. Select from a large directory of namebrand stores. The percentage that goes to the school is indicated. Online SecurityEScrip places a tremendous value on the relationships it has with its
program participants across the country. Safeguarding personal information
is one of their highest commitments. EScrip will not license, sell, exchange,
or distribute any specific information about its participants to any third
parties who are not directly involved in the eScrip program. By participating
in the eScrip program you are authorizing them to use information relating
to your registered card transactions for the limited purposes of processing
rebates to your designated organization and providing cumulative reports
to your organization. No purchase details are provided to eScrip, only
the dollar amounts and card numbers for processing contributions. Club ScripSome stores, such as Albertson’s PW, Safeway and Target offer Scrip only through the use of their club cards. By registering these cards online a certain percentage of your purchases at these stores will be contributed to St. Lucy’s. Club Cards not registered on eScrip (Nob Hill and Albertson’s) do not provide family summaries, which why these purchases need to be logged on the WCE. SchoolpopSchoolpop (www.schoolpop.com)
is a web-based emporium that offers multiple ways for individuals to earn
money for non-profits or schools such as St. Lucy’s. Schoolpop’s
“Shop & Earn” online shopping links shoppers with various
online merchants, where purchases result in contributions to St. Lucy
School. Shoppers can either register their credit cards with Schoolpop and make purchases from its catalog and featured store merchants, or buy paper scrip from its “Scrip and Earn” site. Schoolpop’s “Learn & Earn” offers educational and family media products such as school supplies and educational software. Again, St. Lucy School receives a percentage of each purchase. Through Schoolpop’s “Auction & Earn” program, St. Lucy School receives a percentage of the purchase price of certain items listed on eBay’s auction site. Lastly, Schoolpop offers its own credit card. Any purchases made with the Schoolpop credit card results in an additional 1% return to St. Lucy School. Annual RequirementThere is a $3,500 annual obligation for each family in the amount of Scrip purchased, with a $350 buyout option. Buyout must be paid by August 31, 2005, and the assessment for failure to comply will be billed on May 15, 2006. The assessment is 10% of the family's shortfall from the $3,500 requirement. The annual amount is easily reached with grocery purchases alone, however we encourage all parents to use Scrip whenever possible to help support our school. Scrip contributions are factored into the operation budget and are responsible for limiting the price of tuition. Scrip CoordinatorThe Staff and School Board at St. Lucy Parish School would like to thank
Ann Ricci for volunteering as Scrip Coordinator. The prestigious position of running our Scrip Program requires
a lot of expertise, responsibility and effort that is supported by Parent
Service volunteers. If you would like to perform your Parent Service by
helping out with the Scrip Program by selling Scrip, processing orders,
picking up Scrip from vendors, or other program activities, send an email
to scrip@stlucyschool.org. |
