St. Lucy

Wednesday Newsletter
November 18, 2008
Dear
Parents,
Got news? Our seventh
graders published their first issue of the student newspaper last week,
and your children each received an issue.
If they didn’t bring theirs home, please ask them to so you can
read it too! Named Lightning
180 by the seventh graders this year (in reference to the number of
days school is in session each school year), the newspaper is fully
planned, written, and edited by students.
They are moderated by Mrs. Quinn in Language Arts, and by Mr.
Fullerton
who has expertise in graphic design. Earlier
this year, I sent issues of last year’s student newspaper and student
literary magazine to Bishop McGrath, superintendent of schools Marian
Stuckey, and to each of the admissions directors at our six local Catholic
high schools. They responded
with rave reviews, remarking on the high quality and obvious creativity of
our student’s work, and each was impressed that we offer these unusual
opportunities to our students. Please
do ask to see your child’s issue of Lighting
180! You’ll enjoy
reading the seventh grade’s take on life at

The Student Council food drive is looking good!
Students were treated to a funky cheer by Student Council members
last week as encouragement to participate.
If you are in a position to donate to the food drive, it is
continuing throughout the week. Thank
you for supporting the drive through participation and/or prayer!
This Friday we will not have school due to the diocesan Faith
Formation Conference. This is
a day-long conference that all elementary school teachers in the diocese
are attending in order to focus on the development of faith in the
classroom. Daycare will be
open regular hours on Friday. Next
week we have a short week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Our Thanksgiving mass is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30, and as
always we welcome all parents, grandparents, and extended families!
In anticipation of Thanksgiving next week, we have much to be
thankful for, even as we experience joys and frustrations in our daily
lives. Our children are such a
gift to us, and it is also a gift that we are able to provide them with a
wonderful, strong, faith-based education.
Over the past weeks we’ve had many graduates of the school return
to provide community service, and they are excellent reminders of how
Catholic education nurtures the very best in each student.
As I chatted with and observed our many student volunteers, I was
struck time and again by how thoughtful, articulate, sincere, generous,
and mature they were. Our
Catholic graduates, and indeed our current students, provide daily
evidence of the immeasurable value of our sacrifices on their behalf.
As I celebrate Thanksgiving with my family next week, I will be
grateful for not only my own children but for yours as well, and for the
gifts we share as we work to educate them in community together.
With gratitude for all you do, and warmest
Thanksgiving wishes,
Jennifer Martin

address so we can send a letter off to them.
Send info to the front office or email Laurie.
We did send our mailing to 265 grandparents last month, but we
don't want to miss anybody!
